Plastic Surgery Specialists offer permanent hair reduction with laser hair removal treatment. This treatment option for hair removal is great news for both men and women and can target many different areas on the body.

Women and men have subjected themselves to painful, expensive methods of hair removal. Today, laser hair removal is a more viable alternative to shaving, waxing, and plucking than ever before. In fact, nearly 1.3 million Americans underwent laser hair removal in 2009 due to its proven safety and effectiveness.

During laser hair removal, a large beam of highly concentrated light is generated and focused onto the skin. The light emitted is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles (melanin). Throughout the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, allowing the hair to absorb the light and heat up. This significantly reduces the hair’s ability to regrow and results in permanent hair reduction over time.

Because hair grows in phases, a series of treatments will be needed to remove the hair that subsequently enters the growth phase. Treatments are generally spaced 6-8 weeks apart to compensate for this.

Following laser hair removal the treated area may appear slightly red, but this is usually minimal and gone within a few hours. If you have tanned skin or have been exposed to a lot of sunlight, you may be asked to wait until the tan has subsided to begin treatment. Additionally, the treated area must be shaved close to the skin immediately prior to treatment – this can be done at home and we will assist in shaving the hard-to-reach areas in the office. Three weeks prior to treatment, patients are told not to use hair removal products such as gels and waxes.
